Factors to Consider When Buying a Laptop Under ₹15,000

When buying a laptop under ₹15,000 in India, it’s essential to set the right expectations and focus on key factors that determine usability and performance. Since laptops in this budget category come with entry-level hardware, evaluating aspects like display, performance, storage, and battery life will help you choose the best option for your needs. Here are the key factors to consider before making a purchase:

Display and Build Quality

Budget laptops usually come with a 11.6-inch to 14-inch HD display, which is sufficient for basic tasks like web browsing, watching videos, and working on documents. The build quality may be plastic-heavy, so look for a laptop with a sturdy hinge and compact design to ensure durability.

Processor and Performance

At this price range, most laptops feature entry-level Intel Celeron, Intel Atom, or AMD A-series processors. These processors are suitable for light computing tasks but may struggle with multitasking and heavy applications. Don’t expect high-speed performance, but they work well for basic needs like document editing, browsing, and video streaming.

RAM and Storage

Laptops under ₹15,000 typically come with 2GB or 4GB RAM, which is just enough for lightweight tasks. Opting for 4GB RAM is recommended for smoother performance.
For storage, you’ll mostly find 32GB or 64GB eMMC storage, which is similar to what’s found in tablets. If possible, choose a laptop that supports expandable storage via SSD or HDD slots for better performance.

Battery Life

Battery backup is crucial for budget laptops, as they are often used for online learning and casual browsing. Expect a battery life of around 4 to 6 hours, depending on the usage. Always check user reviews to get a real-world estimate of battery performance.

Operating System

Most laptops under ₹15,000 run on Windows 10/11 (S Mode), Chrome OS, or Linux-based systems. Windows in S Mode allows only Microsoft Store apps for security and performance but can be switched to full Windows if needed. Chrome OS is lightweight and great for web-based tasks, while Linux is ideal for users comfortable with open-source platforms.

Connectivity and Ports

Since budget laptops are meant for basic tasks, connectivity options are often limited. However, ensure your laptop has USB ports (preferably USB 3.0), an HDMI port, a headphone jack, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth support for seamless connectivity. Some models may even include an SD card slot for additional storage expansion.
