Brilliant Directories advertises two prices: $97 a month, or $997 once. Neither is what you’ll actually spend in year one, because directory software is never the only line item.
We ran the demo and priced out the full setup. Here’s what the bill looks like.

The feature sets are near-identical. The real differences are the payment structure and the instant business records — 1,000 against 100, which matters when you’re seeding a new directory and don’t want to type in listings by hand.
Total cost over one and three years

Break-even is month 11. Ten months of the monthly plan costs $970, just under the lifetime price. Past that point, every month on the monthly plan is money you didn’t need to spend.
This makes the decision simpler than it looks. The monthly plan is only rational if you genuinely might abandon the project within ten months. If you’re building a directory you intend to run, the lifetime plan wins on arithmetic, not on marketing.
The counter-argument is risk: $997 up front on a platform you haven’t used is real exposure, and “lifetime” depends on the company staying in business. Brilliant Directories has been operating since 2009 and claims 50,000+ sites, which is reassurance rather than a guarantee. Use the demo properly first.

That $697.90 changes the maths considerably. Break-even against the monthly plan drops from month 11 to month 8 — $97 × 8 is $776, already more than the discounted lifetime price.
Put differently: if you’d run this directory for eight months or longer, paying monthly costs you more than owning it outright.

The costs nobody lists
This is where budgets go wrong. The subscription is the starting point, not the total.
Domain name. $10–15 a year. SSL is included, so that’s the only hosting-adjacent cost.
Payment processing. Stripe, PayPal and Authorize.net are supported. Brilliant Directories takes nothing from your revenue — genuinely unusual, and worth the emphasis — but your processor charges its normal rate, roughly 2.9% plus 30¢ per transaction. On $2,000 of monthly membership fees that’s about $60 a month.
Add-ons. The platform sells optional add-ons on top of the plans
Premium themes. 10+ themes are included
Development work. Optional, but realistic. Deeper layout changes need a developer, and the most common first-year surprise is paying someone $200–500 to make the front end look less like a template.
Migration. If you’re moving an existing directory, budget for data cleanup regardless of platform.

Running more than one directory
Each plan covers one website. Multi-site bundles are available at a discount, but the pricing isn’t published.

WordPress is cheaper in cash and more expensive in hours. The hosted platforms cost more up front and remove the maintenance, the plugin conflicts and the security patching. Which is cheaper depends entirely on what your time is worth.
Is it worth the money?
Short answer: at $697.90 for life, if you’re serious about the directory, yes. At $97 a month indefinitely, only if the directory earns more than that — which for a paid-listings site means roughly ten members at $10 a month, or three at $30.
That’s the number to hold onto. The platform is not expensive in absolute terms; it’s expensive relative to a directory with no members. Get ten paying listings and it pays for itself.
