Why Clean Digital Camera Lens?

Cleaning camera lens

The simple reason and most obvious of cleaning your digital camera lens is because it has got dirty. By this only you can ensure high quality shots and snaps from your precious DSLR. You might notice after using your camera for few months that your images look cloudy and you may have why it was happening. Now if this is really the case with you then take a look at his camera, Open the front lens cap, You are most likely to find the front element of the lens is very dirty with oily fingerprints and other stuff all over the place.

Another important reason to clean your camera lens is keep your images free of particles that might show up in background highlights and other parts of the image.

Dust is a normal part of a photographer’s life. While it is a good idea to prevent dust from landing on your gear, whether you like it or not, you will eventually end up in a dusty environment some day. So, it is not a matter of how, but when. If you see a beautiful sunset on a windy and dusty day, are you not going to take a picture? Some photographers say things like “do not get your gear dirty in first place”, which I consider to be a ridiculous statement. Any photographer would never want to miss an opportunity for a good picture, just because he wants to keep his gear clean.

How to clean Digital Camera Lens :

Cleaning the body of a DSLR camera requires the same process as cleaning a point and shoot camera body. Use a soft, dry cloth, such as a microfiber cloth, to gently clean the camera body of any grime, dust, or fingerprints. If you have some persistent grime, you can slightly dampen the cloth with distilled water before cleaning the body.

To keep the DSLR camera’s lens mount and its electrical contacts working as well as possible, you need to keep this area dry and free of grime. Again a microfiber cloth is a great tool for this.

A DSLR camera has a mirror mechanism inside the camera that becomes exposed to the elements each time you change the lens on the camera. Cleaning the DSLR mirror requires some special care because the mirror is a delicate component that’s key to the camera’s performance. Use a small blower bulb to remove any dust, but avoid touching the mirror’s surface with any significant force. If you’re nervous about cleaning the mirror, choose the safe route and use a camera repair shop.
With a DSLR camera, the image sensor also will need to be cleaned from time to time. Dust on the image sensor shows up as slightly blurry spots in your images. Some cameras have a built-in image sensor cleaning system, usually involving a fast vibration of the sensor. To perform a thorough cleaning of the image sensor, though, you will want to use a swab or a sensor brush. Image sensor cleaning kits are sold at camera retailers, which can ensure you have the right equipment. You also can have a camera repair center perform this type of cleaning for you. Cleaning digital camera lens

To maintain the mirror and image sensor in the best possible condition, place the lens mount cover over the lens mount any time you will remove a lens from the camera for more than several seconds.

To clean the DSLR lens, use a small blower bulb and soft brush to remove any dust or sand from the lens. You then may gently wipe the lens with a dry, soft cloth in a circular motion from the middle outward. If you don’t remove the grit first, you could scratch the lens when using the cloth. Because the interchangeable DSLR lens has two glass surfaces that are exposed to the elements, you’re going to want to clean both the front element and the back element of the lens.
To maintain the integrity of the glass on both sides of the lens, place lens covers on both ends of the lens as soon as you remove the lens from the camera. And keep the lens cap on the front element of the lens whenever the lens is attached to the camera, but you’re not shooting photos.
To clean the LCD, follow the same procedure that you would use to clean the LCD on a point and shoot camera. Even though the LCD on the DSLR camera may be larger than what you’d find on a beginner-level camera, the process of cleaning the LCD is the same regardless of its size. When cleaning an LCD, use as little pressure as possible, because the LCD can be damaged with excessive pressure. Additionally if you have disposable wipes specifically designed for an LCD computer monitor or TV, those can be used with the LCD screen on your DSLR camera too.
Never use canned air to clean any part of the DSLR camera. The pressure behind canned air is too powerful for the camera and could cause damage. With some DSLR cameras, you even could drive dust or sand inside the camera body with the pressure behind canned air, damaging the camera’s interior components.
Finally, if you need to use any liquid to clean the camera, always place a few drops of the liquid on the cloth and then clean the camera. Do not place the liquid directly on the camera. Never use alcohol or paint thinner on the camera; distilled water should work well, if needed.

2) Dangers of Improper Lens Cleaning

Most people end up with bad equipment because of their creative ways to clean it. Remember, camera lenses are very similar to glass lenses on eyeglasses, which means that they can be easily scratched. Lenses are generally made of tough optical glass, but if you attempt to clean it with cloth that might have sand particles on it, you will surely scratch the optical surface. That’s because sand is harder than glass. If you use a wrong type of chemical liquid on lenses, you might damage the lens coating. If you put too much of the liquid on the lens, some of it might get inside the lens and give you all kinds of trouble afterwards. The list goes on and on.

If you decide to clean your lenses yourself, it is very important that you choose the right tools for the job and use them properly. If you still need assistance regarding camera repair in kolkata then please let us know.

3) Using Protective Filters

Every lens I own and use has a high quality protective filter in front of it. I also suggest protecting expensive lenses in my articles on purchasing camera gear and other gear-related articles I post on this blog. Why? Because filters make it easier not only to protect your lens, but also to clean it. Some lenses have threads or “steps” right by the front lens element (separate from filter threads), which attract dust and even cut off pieces from microfiber cloth. Overtime, it gets difficult to keep the front of the lens clean due to all the stuff that gets attached to those threads. A protective filter will go over those threads and you will spend much less time cleaning your lenses. If you are too worried about image quality, don’t be – take a look at my gallery and Lola’s weddings page. Every picture you see was taken with a lens that had a protective filter. Do you see any problems with image quality? Just use professional multi-coated filters from companies like B+W and Hoya. Those filters will have the least impact on image quality, because they are made of high quality glass. They are expensive, but definitely worth it. When you consider the amount of time you will be spending on cleaning your lenses and when you weigh in all potential problems such as scratching your lens, you will quickly realize the benefits of using filters. If you happen to scratch or break your filter, you just buy another one and your lens stays protected.

4) Tools to clean lenses

tools to clean camera lenses

There are plenty of different tools available on the market today for taking care of your lenses. I have used many different solutions before and I found some products to be more effective than others. Here is the list of tools that I personally use and recommend for cleaning lenses:

Zeiss Liquid Lens Cleaner or Eclipse Optic Lens Cleaning Solution are the liquids I personally use and recommend for cleaning lenses
Visible Dust Magic Cleaner is a large piece of microfiber cloth for cleaning lenses. Grab a couple of these.
Tiffen Lens Cleaning Paper to clean the optical lens elements.
Giotto’s Rocket Blower to blow off the dust from lenses.
Giotto’s Hair Brush or any other soft & clean brush you can find for removing dust before cleaning lens elements.
A hard toothbrush or some other hard brush for cleaning the rubber focus/zoom rings.
There are many other types of liquids and tools you can find online or in a local camera shop that also work great. Giotto’s Lens Cleaning Kit is also great if you don’t want to spend much – just don’t buy the other kit that comes with a small blower, you will need the large one.

5) Lens Cleaning Process

My process of cleaning lenses is divided into three parts:

Cleaning the exterior of the lens, including the lens hood – I first start off by using wet microfiber cloth to remove any dust or dirt from lens exterior and lens hood. I apply the same optical formula that contains anti-static material on microfiber cloth or if the lens is too dirty, I start off by using regular water (distilled water would work best) and then finish off with using the solution. To clean the rubber zoom and focus rings, I use an ordinary toothbrush, which works great for removing particles in between the rubber lines.
Cleaning the lens mount – a very important part of the process that sometimes requires me to clean the mount several times due to oil and dirt. Apply the same lens cleaning solution on microfiber cloth and clean the mount thoroughly. Don’t forget to clean the round contacts on the lens as well.
Cleaning the rear and the front optical elements – I find microfiber cloth to be unsafe for cleaning optical lens elements, especially if you reuse the same microfiber cloth that you use to clean your lenses outside. Also, sometimes microfiber cloth will leave particles that are hard to remove with the rocket blower, so I rely on lens cleaning tissues instead. They clean glass very well and if they leave anything on the lens, it can be easily removed by the rocket blower.

6. How to clean your sensor :

Find an area that is as free of dust and wind as possible.
With a full battery and no lens on your camera, look for the menu option to manually clean your camera. Check your manual if you can’t find this option.
When you select this mode, you will hear the mirror lock back and reveal the sensor. Note that you just need to power off your camera to release the mirror back to its usual place in front of the camera.
Holding the camera upside down so the LCD screen is facing the ceiling, use the manual air blower to blow air into the camera onto the sensor. Be extremely careful NOT to touch the sensor with the tip of the blower. Best practice is not to put the tip of the blower inside the camera at all. Again do not use compressed air.
After a few blasts of air, turn off the camera and replace the lens. You should take another test shot (as above) to see if this has removed the dust or dirt that was on the sensor. If it has then there is no need to take any further steps. If it remains, then you will likely need to proceed to a ‘wet’ clean of the sensor. If you still need assistance regarding camera repair in kolkata then please let us know.
7. How to wet clean your sensor

Remove the lens and place the camera on a surface with the LCD facing the floor.
Select the manual cleaning option to lock up the mirror.
Remove a sensor swab and using the air blower a few times, blow air to remove any odd pieces of lint that may be stuck to the swab.
Add two (or three drops max) of the solution to the tip of the swab. Do not oversaturate the swab or you will leave streaks on the sensor. Less is definitely more in this case!
With great care place the swab onto one side of the sensor and with not too much force, gently move the swab across the sensor in one smooth motion. When you get to the other side, turn the swab over and repeat the process starting from the far side back to where you started. Again, do this in one smooth motion with no great force.
At this stage, I use a loupe and inspect the sensor to see if I can see if the dust has been removed. If you are not sure, turn off the camera and replace the lens and take a further test shot to inspect for dust.
If you see some dust remains then you will need to repeat the process but it is important to use another clean new swab. Do not reuse a swab.
If you see streaks on the sensor then this means that you have used too much solution. Wait a few minutes and then repeat the process with less solution. Two drops is usually enough.

You will now have a clean sensor. When done properly with the correct equipment it is quite a simple process to clean the camera’s sensor. Although a little daunting the first time you do this, you will be saving yourself the unnecessary expense and inconvenience of being without your camera by using a professional cleaning service.
