laptop touchpad repair

 – Do it Yourself :

For windows 10 :

Before taking to a repair center for laptop touchpad repair f  try these steps if  you are using windows 10  :

Check if touchpad is enabled ?

Open the Settings menu (Start > Settings) and go to Devices > Mouse & touchpad. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click Additional mouse options.
The Mouse Properties window will open. Click the tab furthest to the right (it may be called ELAN or Device Settings). Under Devices check to see that your touchpad is not disabled. If it is disabled, click the touchpad to select it and then click Enable.

One other thing to try is to see if your laptop has a function key that enables/disables the touchpad. It should look like a tiny touchpad with a diagonal line through it (on my laptop it’s F6, on other laptops it may be Fn + F5, Fn + F6 or something else entirely).

This may save you from spending few bucks unnessessarily on suspected issues regarding laptop touchpad repair.

Update your drivers

You might be using windows 10 for quite a few months now, most of the touchpads are updated to windows 10 but you may need to manually update your driver.

There are two ways to do this. First, right-click the Start button and click Control Panel. From the Control Panel window, open the Device Manager.

In the Device Manager, go to Mice and other pointing devices and find your touchpad (mine is called Lenovo Pointing Device, but yours may be named something else). Right-click on your touchpad and click Update Driver Software…

Your computer will check the Internet for updated driver software and, hopefully, update accordingly. But if your computer can’t find an updated driver, you may have to look for the updated driver by yourself. To do this, go to your laptop manufacturer’s website and look for their downloads section. Here, you should be able to find any updated drivers that the laptop manufacturer or the touchpad manufacturer has released for your specific device. If you can’t find this section, just Google “[LAPTOP MODEL] Windows 10 touchpad driver.”

Once you’ve downloaded the new driver from you laptop manufacturer’s site, you can try installing it. If this doesn’t work, you may want to first uninstall the old driver and then re-install the new driver. To do this, go back to the Device Manager, right-click on your touchpad, and click Uninstall. Then re-install the new driver (that you just downloaded) and restart your computer if necessary.

Perform a hard reset.

Performing a hard reset is another option if you are facing laptop touchpad repair issue. A hard reset is a procedure that helps you clear the driver instructions. Your laptop will reload all the instructions from the drivers and software stored in your operating system which can help to solve some problems.

This procedure will not erase any data from your computer since it is not a reformat of the operating system. Please be relaxed.

Here is how you could do the hard reset.

1) Turn off the computer.

2) Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station.

3) Disconnect all external connected peripheral devices such as USB storage devices, external displays, and printers.

4) Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.

5) Remove the battery from the battery compartment.

6) Press and hold down the Power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual electrical charge from the capacitors that protect the memory.

7) Insert the battery and plug the AC adapter back into the notebook computer, but do not connect any of the peripheral devices.

8) Press the Power button to turn on the computer.

9) If a startup menu opens, use the arrow keys to select Start Windows Normally, and then press the Enter key.

10) After reconnecting each of the peripheral devices, run Windows Update to update all device drivers.

Operating system not responding

The first thing to check is whether the computer and the operating system is not responding as well. It could be that the computer is frozen, meaning it is not responding to any commands you give it. In this case, the touchpad would also not be working.
To check this, try pressing the Num Lock or Scroll Lock keys on the keyboard to see if any lights on the keyboard turn on. Many keyboards have little lights to indicate when Num Lock and Scroll Lock are activated. If your keyboard has this feature and the lights turn on and off when you press the Num Lock and Scroll Lock keys, then the computer is not frozen. If the lights remain on or off after pressing the keys several times, then the computer is likely frozen. Restart the computer to see if this resolves the problem and results in the touchpad working again.

Touchpad button

Some laptops have either a button above or around the touchpad or a Fn key combo to enable and disable the touchpad. If your laptop has this feature, try pressing the button or keys to turn on the touchpad before following any of the steps below.
External device

Some USB and PS/2 input devices automatically disable the touchpad when connected. As a troubleshooting step, turn off the computer, disconnect all external devices, then start the computer again to ensure one of them has not turned off the touchpad. If this fixes your problem, you can reconnect the mouse to continue troubleshooting or changing settings discussed in the next sections.

Check CMOS (BIOS) setup

Make sure the touchpad has not been disabled in the CMOS (BIOS) setup. Once you have entered BIOS or CMOS setup, check the hardware device settings and if the touchpad is disabled, re-enable it and restart the laptop to test the touchpad.
Corrupt operating system files

Another possible cause for laptop touchpad repair  is corrupt operating system files. While typically you would notice other issues as well due to corrupt system files, this could result in the touchpad not working.
Fixing this requires you to either activate a restore point at a date prior to when the touchpad stopped working, or you may need to perform an operating system repair installation. The repair installation will require you to access a restore partition on the hard drive or use an operating system install disc.
Defective hardware

After all these effect if you find that you need laptop touchpad repair then it may be defective. Contact the computer manufacturer for further suggestions or take the laptop to a computer repair shop. It could require replacement of the touchpad itself or another hardware component. If the touchpad cannot be fixed the only option left is to connect and use an external mouse for any work.
