In Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 10, System File Checker is integrated with Windows Resource Protection (WRP), which protects registry keys and folders as well as critical system files. Origin of this command (SFC.exe) is first implemented in Windows 95 Due to DLL hell Problem. Later on, It becomes a full part of Windows OS Eco Systems.

What does Sfc /scannow do?

How to Use SFC /ScanNow:

  1. Open the command prompt. (Runs As Administrator)

2. If you are using Windows 10, Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, first run the inbox Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM). Run this command.

Type dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth  and Hit Enter.

This process takes time.so don’t just rush wait.

For Windows 7 or earlier os user no need to run this one.

3.When the above process finishes then Run Sfc command.

Type sfc /scannow and Hit Enter

System File Checker

The command will scan all protected system files, and replace corrupted files with a cached copy that is located in a compressed folder at %WinDir%\System32\dllcache

This Process also takes some time so be patience. When this process complete you will this message on the prompt screen.

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. (No Error)
  • Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation. (Run The Proces In Safe Mode)
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. (Found corrupt file and fixed them)

When The Process Complete then Restart the computer.

Technical details of sfcscannow command:

The system file checker utility, Sfc.exe, allows administrators to scan all protected resources to verify their versions.

sfc /SCANNOW

sfc /VERIFYFILE=c:\windows\system32\kernel32.dll

sfc /SCANFILE=d:\windows\system32\kernel32.dll /OFFBOOTDIR=d:\ /OFFWINDIR=d:\windows

sfc /VERIFYONLY /FILESONLY
