Try these steps sequentially to troubleshoot the issue:

Step 1] Restart and Retry Updating the System

This is an easy step that resolves the issue often. Sometimes, when the system fails to update, just restart the system and check if it works.

Step 2] Check if the RAM is overloaded

Windows Update is usually a background application. So sometimes when there becomes too much programs running in the front end, it prevents the update from running seamlessly in the background. During such cases it is advisable to check how loaded the system is.

  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to open the Security Option Window and select Task Manager from the list.
  • Check if the Disk Utilization is shooting up to 100% frequently. If yes, then that means the
system is overburdened with tasks thus restricting the Windows Update.

In this case, try closing a few programs and then Try Again.

Step 4] Use the Microsoft Online Troubleshooter

Along with the in-built troubleshooter that enables us to check for common issues, Microsoft has provided users with an online troubleshooter to fix critical issues.

Step5] Check For Issues with Third-party devices connected with the system

Sometimes, issues occur when there is trouble with any third-party device connected to the computer. In such a case, disconnect all third-party devices like keyboard, mouse, etc. If that work, it would mean that the issue is with specific third-party hardware. We could then start reconnecting the pieces one by one to check which one of them was exactly troublesome.

We could also update the drivers for the third-party hardware. Connect the troublesome hardware once your Windows has been updated and update its drivers.

The reason third-party hardware could be an issue is due to the following fact. When we usually update
Windows, it updates all the connected hardware, but the drivers for the third-party hardware that are not connected can’t get updated. Thus, when we connect that hardware later, Windows gets confused and stops the whole process.

Step 6] Disable the Antivirus Software

Antivirus software can often give you troubles by stopping or slowing down your system. Antivirus software at times can interfere with the internal process. In this case, we can temporarily disable the software and check if it helps.

Step 7] Run The CHKDSK Command

The CHKDSK command identifies the ad sectors in a hard disk and Troubleshoot them.
